What are different types of teaching methods?

The earlier teacher-centered teaching method was more important, but nowadays student-centered teaching method is more important.

There are two aspects to teaching:

  • Teacher-centered approach
  • Student-centered approach

The following lines introduce the teaching methods.

Story Telling Method:

It provides information to children through storytelling, which is very much in tune with children’s psychology. Stories from ideal personalities, social workers, kings, and morals are more effective. Its main purpose is to create motivation and interest in children. Stories need to be written according to children’s comprehension and language. This method is usually useful for children under 6 years of age.


  • Focusing on something.
  • Creativity in ideas.
  • Increase in vocabulary.
  • Text Book Method

In it, the teachers read the text of the book aloud and interpret the key points. Students are also given the opportunity to read the text. It is important that the text be written in simple language. The article should be understood in terms of the age of the children. Include things in writing, printing, and content that are fun and entertaining for children.

Lecture Method:

This method is also called Chalk & Talk Method. In this way, teachers discuss the topic in the classroom through oral speech. Explain the title by giving examples. This is a very effective way to explain the lessons.


  • Must be systematic.
  • To be logical.
  • To be effective.
  • It is a good way to teach large numbers.

Negative features:

  • Promotes listening, which is the opposite of learning by doing.
  • The teacher is the focused method.
  • Does not increase the student’s comprehension.
  • Demonstration Method

It is basically taught by showing something. For example, show the globe, or map, to illustrate the world. This method is very useful for teaching science and other sciences. However, it also has some negative features:

  • Practical activities are very few.
  • Education is given only by observation.
  • Observation is done only according to the teacher.
  • Education of all sciences and arts is not possible.
  • Tutorial Method

In this method the students are divided into groups and the group is taught instead of the individual. It has two forms:

  • Homogenous
  • Heterogeneous students of different abilities

Whenever a group of students is formed, there will always be a group of students of different abilities, so that even weaker students can learn in the class.

Question & Answer Method:

This method is the invention of Socrates. “The information that is hidden inside us can be extracted through question and answer,” he said. The feature of this method is that it is a focused method for both teachers and students. The questions make the students curious, and the teacher’s answers provide guidance for the students, increasing the knowledge of both the student and the teacher. In general, this teaching method is very useful.

Discussion Method:

It teaches through discussion on any topic. First, the teacher talks to the students, then the students discuss with each other. Its features are:

  • It allows for open-minded discussion.
  • Leadership ability is sharpened.
  • Endurance and the power to listen to the one in front is created.
  • Heuristic Method

This method was given by H.E. Pollion and Dankar have named this method as Problem Solving Method. In this way, the students find the facts by themselves, analyze the difficulties encountered in finding the facts, as a result of which the facts are reached. In this, students try first, there are mistakes in this endeavor, but by overcoming the mistakes again and again. This method is very helpful in building self-confidence in students.

Discovery Method:

It uses a search-and-find method of teaching. This method has a lot in common with the disclosure method, but there are several basic differences between the two:

  • It is used to teach social sciences, while the disclosure method is used to make new rules in science.
  • The method of discovery interprets existing facts, while the method of discovery involves new discoveries.
  • The method of discovery deals with the facts of the past, while the method of disclosure deals with the present.
